Convert is a fairly new Email Marketing Service provider founded by Nathan Barry. His goal was to create an email service that best caters to the needs of content creators like bloggers, podcasters, etc.
Before creating Convertkit Nathan was a designer, author, and blogger. After learning the power of email marketing he gave up his successful blogging career to build ConvertKit.
Being a blogger himself Nathan had a clear understanding of the type of email service best suits that need of content marketers.
I admire how open and transparent Nathan has been about his business journey and frustrations as a blogger, which led him to create Convertkit.
In my humble opinion, there’s nothing that beats a service created by someone who is a firsthand user himself.
Could this be true for Convertkit? I intend to help you find out.
Is Convertkit The Right Email Service For You?
Before we go any further, I thought we should clear this one up. This is to help you decide Convertkit is the right fit for your email marketing needs. There’s absolutely no need to waste time and money on the product that does not serve your needs.
Convertkit Is NOT For You IF The Following Apply To You (Nathan Barry Says So!)
1. You Only Want To Work With Beautiful Email Templates
Convertkit is mostly about plain text emails with a few bells and whistles. The reason? The focus of my email marketing campaign should be to deeply connect with your subscribers and deliver create value to them. You can only achieve this goal via your content.
Yes, the plain old text!
Its those beautiful words that will eventually help you turn a subscriber into a paying customer, not fancy pictures and graphics. Imagine the time spent working on the fanciness as opposed to the actual content. That’s like 95% : 5%! That’s ridiculous when you think about it.
Think about it this way. Don’t you truly connect with the message written in plain text? You know those emails you receive from your colleagues, friends, family? Would you rather they have flashy content? I don’t think so!
The same applies when it comes to your subscribers. They will connect with you on a deeper personal level with plain text than with commercial looking non-personal emails.
So I think its better actually to spend more time polishing your content than working on beautifying your message. What do you think?
2. You are Dealing With Many Distinct Audiences
Perhaps you offer multiple unrelated products and you need to create separate email lists for each one of those?
With Convertkit all your subscribers would be blended together using tags and segments. This would probably be a problem for you. That’s why it would be advisable to get a separate Convertkit account for each email list. Yet that would also be expensive.
3. You Have A Small Budget
In order to afford $29 per month (Or more depending on the number of your subscribers, you should be generating enough income to be able to cover your monthly Convertkit subscription.
Surely, I would not recommend that you begin your blogging business with Convertkit. I would recommend cheaper autoresponders like MailChimp. Then when your subscriber base has grown you can migrate to Convertkit.

If you are a blogger with a substantial subscriber base, own an affiliate website, digital course creator or any type of online creator, then Convertkit is definitely for you.

Their forms and landing pages are attractive and considerably easy to customize and embed into your website. The form is the first thing a person interact with when they’re on your website.
Forms play a vital role in a person’s decision whether they want to subscribe to your blog or not. In this respect, Convertkit delivers good results. Whether you want to give out a free gift, an exit intent pop-up, e-course sign up or a landing page.
However, I feel like they could do better, in terms of customization flexibility.
2. You Can Increase Conversions With Automated Emails
Automated emails allow you to set up easy workflows once and then everything gets automated. This gives you time to focus on growing your business. Convertkit email automation allows you to:
- Create powerful, automated funnels
- Set up the rules then let their app do the work for you
- Customize a subscriber’s path based on their actions
- Always know what’s the next step for your subscriber
- Deliver targeted content to the right people at the right time
- Easily segment your audience based on their customer journey
3. Subscriber Segmentation
This feature enables you to organize and understand your subscribers from a big list using tags and segments. This way you are able to send the targeted message to the right person at the right time based on their interests, location, etc.
You can easily send your subscribers one-off broadcast emails when you have time-sensitive content or integrate your RSS feed to send your weekly blog posts.
Convertkit integrates well with lots of third-party apps in categories such as landing pages, memberships, eCommerce, webinar services, surveys, social media, etc.
What I Like About Convertkit – The Pros
- Convertkit is super easy to use. Instead of confusing of menu items to navigate you get only 5 simple options. With Convertkit you don’t waste valuable time trying to figure out how it works.
- Your subscribers are tag based and not list based
- Crisp clean design – I got attracted to their color tones. They are attractive yet easy on the eyes. There are no distractions.
- Free migration – If you are moving in with 5,000 subscribers from your previous email service provider, their migrations team does it for free. Everything, including replacing all opt-in forms on your website, moving drip email series, and whatever needs moving from your previous software provider.
- It allows you unlimited offers for one campaign. You can offer as many downloads or freebies as you like and have them all funnel into a single campaign.
- You are not obligated to use a visual editor. Some tools like MailChimp, Aweber, etc. require you to use the drag and drop function. I personally find that tedious and a little annoying.
- Ability to A/B test your email broadcast headlines. A/B split testing and determining which headlines work can dramatically boost your email open rates. This can directly impact your business bottom line positively.
- You Can Auto-insert your subscriber’s first name with an option of no name (if they didn’t enter their first name). People like it when you address them with their first names. It gives your message a human feel.
What I Don’t Like About Convertkit – The Cons
We can agree that no email service provider will be 100% perfect right? The same applies to Convertkit too. Here are some of the issues that I wish would be improved.
- No A/B testing for headlines in automated email series – you can A/B test headlines for broadcast emails, but not drip campaigns. Bit of a bummer right there. It would be nice to be able to A/B headlines for the sequences, wouldn’t it? However, this seems to be a common phenomenon for many other email services.
- Limited customization options on forms and templates – Convertkit forms are great but there isn’t much customization you can do except for color. If you need further customization like text font change, you will need to add your own CSS.
- Inadequate ability to deal with cold subscribers. It’s important to keep your email list as clean as you possibly can. It’s important that you focus on communicating with people who are actually interested in hearing from you. Yes, ConvertKit provides an automated tag of “cold” subscribers for anyone who hasn’t opened an email in the last 90 days. But your ability to define who is considered a cold subscriber or a way to easily remove them from your list is limited. You will have to do it manually.
Their support is great because there are many ways you can get help:
- Contact Support Desk by opening a support ticket
- Access over 100 articles in their knowledge base section
- Attend webinars and learn email marketing basics
- Enjoy the Concierge Migration Service if you have 5000 subscribers or more. They don’t charge you extra
- Join their Slack community to connect with other Convertkit users – share experiences

Given that Converkit is very easy to use, it is safe to say that it is beginner friendly. However, based on its price I honestly don’t recommend it if your business is still in the beginner phase where it is not yet generating enough income.
Therefore, here is my final verdict:
If you are a blogger with a growing subscriber base, I highly recommend that you try out Convertkit. However, if you are a beginner blogger I recommend that you start your list with Mailchimp then migrate when your business has gained enough traction.
