What is a niche? + How To Pronounce Niche
Pronunciation: There is no master of pronunciation! But al least you want people to have an idea of what you’re trying to say. Different people pronounce Niche differently – “Neesh”, “Nitch”, depending on which part of the world you come from. In my humble opinion, it doesn’t matter!
As long as you know what it is…
A niche is simply a specific segment of the market that you can target as your “audience” to market to. For example,
- Women over 50 years of age
- Balding men
- Outdoor lovers
- Cooking enthusiasts’ etc.

What to consider when choosing your niche
#1. Consider A Marketing Where People Are Already Making Money
You don’t need to come up with a completely new market (That would probably be difficult).
You can still make money in a market where other people are already making money. All you got to do is make sure you stand out and serve the market better.
#2. Look For Something That Interests You
It could be your hobby or something you are passionate about like alternative treatments for diabetes. Or it could be anything that you want to learn more about.
You don’t necessarily need to be an expert in that field. But you should be able to write relevant, interesting content about your niche.
Take, for example, an outdoor lovers’ niche. You may set up a website/blog where you write about different interesting outdoor-related articles.
You could provide useful outdoor hacks and tips, anything interesting to catch the eye of your audience. Within that blog you can promote outdoor affiliate products from any affiliate program of your choice:
All you need to do is sign up for any program to be able to promote their products and earn a commission.
#3. The More Specific Your Audience, The Better
Think of a beauty products niche, it is quite a broad niche with multiple sub-niches within it.
It would be more profitable to go further in and look at something more specific, say, anti-aging products. See, we have narrowed down from beauty onto anti-aging products and it is a very profitable niche.
The cooking enthusiasts’ niche can be broken into many sub-niches,
- Kitchen knives
- Kitchen Scales
- Slow cookers etc.
- Ladies gym attire
- Running shoes
- Supplements etc.
- Pest control products
- Lawn fertilizer
- Hose pipes
- Pool cleaning products etc.
Health And Wellness Niche
- self-help books
- Car seats etc.
Auto Care Niche
- Tire shine
- Vacuum cleaner
- Microfibre towels
- Polish etc.
- Hiking boots
- Trail cameras
- Folding knives (you will be amazed at how expensive these can be! Means you get a good commission).
Focusing on any of these categories can be very profitable.
#4. The Popularity/Demand For Products
This is important because you want to promote products that will sell. It helps to focus on products that most people need, those that they cannot live without. There are millions of these in the marketplace. You just grab a tiny segment and you are good to go.
#5. The Purchasing Power Of Your Audience
You may also want to choose a niche with high purchasing power, like luxury/ high ticket items:
- Golf merchandise
- Luxury getaways
- Designer handbags, perfumes, etc.
These products sell at high prices and will get you bigger commissions. However, if you are beginner, I wouldn’t advise you to go for high ticket items.
Simply because it may take longer to make a sale. You may spend a lot of money on advertising before finally earning a commission.
This may discourage you and you begin thinking that affiliate marketing does not work!
You can still be highly profitable with low ticket items as long as they attract a large pool of buyers.
